United We Succeed, Divided we Fail

"I don't mind being wrong, as long as I can correct my mistakes." - Cable from X-Men

It's exactly one week after the Election Day. Obama won a second term as President, gay marriage was cleared for legalization in 4 more states (in addition to the 6 existing plus the District of Columbia), and government-controlled marijuana for recreational use was legalized in Washington and Colorado. It seems like a great deal of progress was made during this past election, right? Not according to some certain people like this, who apparently can't even define what a communist exactly is:

This prompts a few questions for me? Have people REALLY done their homework when it comes to important political issues, or do they just resort to name calling for something they don't like and/or not understand? That's like making fun of a person with Down syndrome because he/she is retarded. What IS a communist exactly? It's nothing a dictionary can't fix so let's get started!

So I dug this up from dictionary.com:

com·mu·nism

[kom-yuh-niz-uhm] noun
1. a theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state.
2. ( often initial capital letter ) a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self-perpetuating political party.
3. ( initial capital letter ) the principles and practices of the Communist party.
4. communalism.

Hmmm. ALL resources are owned by one government entity. I'm the sole proprietor of this blog, so it can't mean that this is a communist government. Also, if Obama was really a communist, then that lady would basically have no say in elected officials. The government officials would just decide among themselves who would run things and not give a damn about anyone else. Yet, this is about getting her voice and her vote across on an independent, non-government owned media outlet, not to mention that the United States is a republic.

When name calling happens, especially with the all-too-easy N-word, it makes me wonder what goes through people's heads. It's like wishing that a star athlete gets injured just because he or she plays for a rival of your favorite sports team. Amazing how with the choosing of the first black President, there's still so many people that disagree with it. This demographic map shows where racist tweets have originated from, and that most of them have originated from the Southeast. This is surprising considering that Barack Obama won states such as Florida and Virginia (source), and then you have yahoos like these people trying to "secede from the Union" just because Mitt Romney didn't win basically. Really? You're going to quit just because you didn't get your way? What next? You're going to beat me up and take my lunch money?

Urgghhh, so close Tea Partiers and your Teabonics! Thank you so much for playing "Wheel of Fortune," but you don't win the grand prize.

Doesn't the saying go "United we stand, divided we fall?" Things won't always go your way. Turning tail and running from your problems is NOT going to make them better, and there's no way you'll be able to do Rule #10 that way (if the cause of a problem is never found, there can never be a solution).

These guys have the right idea!

Same thing with the "losers" moving to Canada and Australia. So I understand that the Republicans who have lost want to move to a country that better suits their values. That may be a problem, since Canada and Australia both have socialized health care and they both recognize gay marriage. This is all supposed to be bad news for the United States going forward, right? Well, here are some interesting stats on both those critical points:

  • A study shows that same-sex parents raising a child are not statistically different that heterosexual parents raising a child in terms of a child's success (source).
  • "Massachusetts, which became the first state to legalize gay marriage on May 17, 2004, had the lowest divorce rate in the country in 2008. Its divorce rate declined 21% between 2003 and 2008." (source)
  • In spite of spending more money per capita out of any other country in the world, the average life expectancy of an American is slightly above 77 years old, which is actually BELOW the world's average. (source)
  • Even though the US spends so much on healthcare, we don't even rank among the top 36 nations with the best health care. You know who does? Places like Costa Rica, Dominica, and Colombia. These are supposed "third-world countries" people (interesting fact: Costa Rica doesn't even have their own military). Wait, it gets better! Even places like the United Arab Emirates and Oman are on this list. You know, those people in the Middle East that are practically neighbors to those gosh-darn terrorist nations like Iran and Iraq. If these "terrorists" are getting better health care than we are, what does that say about the United States health care system? (source)
Yeah, don't steal from socialized medicine to support socialized medicine!

Also, forget that Canada and Australia teach a radical theory such as evolution in schools, and people such as the Prime Minister of Australia having a partner while not getting married as well as being an athiest. Like they say, don't knock it until you try it (Rule #18: Try something different, especially if the same thing isn't working for you. You won't know what will happen unless you do it for the first time). Maybe it'll work. Maybe it won't. Who knows? Like the basketball great Michael Jordan has said, "I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." However, if you close off all logic and proven science around you, you'll never learn from your mistakes.

Which brings me to another topic of taboo here in the States: socialism. So once again, let dictionary.com do its thing:

socialism  (ˈsəʊʃəˌlɪzəm)
n
1. Compare capitalism an economic theory or system in which the means of production, distribution, and exchange are owned by the community collectively, usually through the state. It is characterized by production for use rather than profit, by equality of individual wealth, by the absence of competitive economic activity, and, usually, by government determination of investment, prices, and production levels
2. any of various social or political theories or movements in which the common welfare is to be achieved through the establishment of a socialist economic system
3. (in Leninist theory) a transitional stage after the proletarian revolution in the development of a society from capitalism to communism: characterized by the distribution of income according to work rather than need
So basically, this can apply to the whole "collecting taxes to be used for government services" deal, right? We get taxed through our paychecks, stuff we buy, and many other countless ways for things contributing to our general welfare. Our economy is basically anything that has involved money. Some people will argue that this is contributing to "big government" and that it's not necessary. These people work too hard for someone else to take their money and give them a handout. Guess what? You're not alone. Whenever I receive a paycheck, I get money taken out of there as well. Heck, whenever I even buy something, there's tax. Who in this country never buys anything? Think about that. Besides, if you don't approve of taxes being used for municipal services, don't use them. So unless you haven't: driven on any roads or highways, gone to public school, received unemployment or worker's compensation, used food stamps, been to a hospital or court, been in any public park, used an airport or public transportation, then maybe someone who argues against government handouts may have a valid claim because this is a very short list of government services available due to these "handouts" that come from taxpayers.

I can see how offical...ahem, official English would still be if there was no schools of "big government"

Everyone has gotten handouts, even the banks we use that currently have billions of our tax money. How come no one is going after them, even when banks like Chase continue to lose at least $2 billion out of nowhere? We all have to keep an open mind and accept ideas from many different places so you keep informed. Fox News for some reason doesn't cut it. That's why I'm here to share some facts of interest. Actually, there is this study that shows that showing people facts that contradict one's beliefs actually makes them STRONGER, so maybe I should just quit now. Still, what fun would this be if I can't make fun of this, and what better way to do that than the Daily Show!

The whole point is to stop the whining and crying, and instead figure out ways to help as opposed to saying "this guy sucks because he's a *insert name here*" What do you use to fix problems? Solutions. Is criticizing ideas incessantly and rejecting solutions up to the point where you have none going to solve anything? No. Trying to destroy other people's solutions just for the hell of it isn't going to magically balance everything out so that lo and behold, everything is fixed. One thing we can learn from Occupy Wall Street (now offshooting into Occupy Sandy as a result of the damage after Hurricane Sandy) is that by working together and not berating each other, people can come up with solutions that can help everyone (Rule #17: Inspire change through positive encouragement and enact change through action). It has grown from a localized protest in New York City to what's now a global movement with a huge network with many people that can do many things in many areas and fields. People keep saying that the movement has died (like the mainstream media and of course, how can I forget my buddies at Fox News), but yet it has lasted over a year and counting, so exactly how many lives does it have? The help that Occupy Sandy is doing is very real, while local government is turning a blind eye to those areas that are (un?)coincidentally poor. Looks like the formula of the Avengers is spot-on: by working together as a team, they can do what no one person can do.

Teamwork isn't so bad. It made the 3rd most grossing box office movie of all time possible.

Rule #19: Disagreeing with every solution, and working with none of them won't get you anywhere. Nothing is perfect the first time out, so try until you get it right. Find out why it doesn't work, and then work to fix it. You cannot progress if you stay in the same place as before.

  1. Man, I need to read up more on current events. Great article! I just learned today that the Prime Minister of Australia is female.
